簡介 一位西班牙鄉紳由於嗜讀騎士小說入迷而喪失心智,企圖模仿古老的遊俠騎士全身披掛、周遊世界,藉由行俠仗義的功績而名垂史冊。他為自己取名為堂吉訶德,騎著一匹瘦馬開始他異想天開的騎士生涯。在《堂吉訶德》第一部中,這位紳士第一次離鄉出遊,不幸受傷而歸。第二次出遊他找到鄰居桑丘.潘沙擔任他的侍從,兩人做出許多荒唐可笑的蠢事,包括將風車當成巨人、把旅店看做城堡、臉盆是無價寶盔,羊群是敵人大軍……最後差一點喪命,被人用牛車帶回家中。

第二部中,堂吉訶德依然不顧他人勸阻,和桑丘外出展開第三次出遊。他倆碰到許多驚險的遭遇,也被公爵夫婦捉弄,桑丘還正式擔任夢寐以久的總督治理海島等。堂吉訶德最後被神秘騎士打敗悒鬱回家,病倒在床,臨終時才恍然大悟,痛斥騎士小說。
